I think the Digital Divide is a serious problem, but we must not forget the other side of the coin: drowning in a flood of information.

I recognise this syndrome ;-) UX can be seen by as an unwelcome cost, a constraint on creativity and a crimp on architectural purity.

I don't have a silver bullet but I've had good outcomes from spending time with technical colleagues, sharing war stories, finding shared goals and lending out my battered copy of the Polar Bear book. As ever, the best remedy for prejudice is meaningful collaboration.

Jenny:

Good stuff! I just read Nielsen's Alertbox article as well. It really helps to put it in perspective. It actually causes me to smirk a little when I think about the fact that we (ux folks) should be able to bust through this wall with relative ease. If we would just use our professional skills and look at those who are adversarial and realize that they are our "users". I also found two other great articles on Nielsen's site that are about three years old. They talked about the corporate usability maturity time frame. One of the articles was the last link in his latest Alertbox. Definitely worth the effort to read, study and digest.

This post reminds me so much of this episode of Penny Arcade:

<a HREF="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/12/3/" rel="nofollow">http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/12/3/</A>

Most of the stuff that you see women wearing in video games is anything but practical. I mean they would be more protected wearing street clothes. What is the point of wearing metal if it doesn't cover any vital organs.

Jenny, you're one of my heroes! If it weren't for you I never would have known that I could run. I just didn't believe I had it in me. Running is incredible, painful and joyous all at the same time. It takes me back to a feeling from childhood when I could climb trees, swing on monkey-bars and feel totally alive and free. Finding the strength to persevere and overcome fitness obstacles helps me believe in myself and my capacity to create positive changes in the world around me. The world is better place with you in it and I am glad to count you as a friend.

This was really interesting to me because I don't find that to be the case with all of my friends. All of my friends both guys and girls tend to send really long text messages except me. Lol. Now in the case of IMs I would definitely say that girls type out way longer IMs than guys and with more detail, correct punctuation, etc. It would be interested to combine both text messages and IMs into a study. I also give kudos to Asta... very cool study. Congrats.

That's ridiculous on both counts. We're probably supposed to fear Obama now since she has biceps? It's funny, because my mom was just telling me now we'd all have to wear sleeveless whether or not we were in shape because it's the "in" thing.

I strongly agree! That would be like saying all the groups of women that fought to get the right to vote were being hypocritical too. I think by promoting your group's events you are putting a face to the group and hence being a great role model yourself. Others may follow just because they are impressed by all that you are doing and recognize the difference that it is making. I say Go You! :)
